Ma negli ultimi tempi tutta la questione è tornata alla ribalta quando Alicia ha preso parte ad importanti eventi mondani, in particolare ai MTV Video Music Awards, occasioni in cui gli outfit e i beauty look delle star sono in primo piano… Ma quest’anno, paradossalmente, quello di cui si è parlato forse di più è stato proprio il no make-up di Alicia, la quale è stata da alcuni aspramente criticata.
Dopo la grande quantità di commenti negativi come questi, Alicia ha deciso di rispondere con un messaggio che esprime chiaramente la sua posizione “Se decido di non truccarmi non significa che sono anti-makeup”.
Anche il marito Swiss Beatz ha difeso la moglie in un video in cui si mostra sconcertato dal fatto che la gente sia “impazzita”, dato che è il suo viso e le sue scelte in merito riguardano solo lei “Potete continuare a fare come volete, lei non vi ha mai detto che non potete più truccarvi, è una sua scelta.”

Interessante anche la presa di posizione di una giornalista del celebre beauty blog refinery29.com, che ha riflettuto sulla scelta di Alicia e di coloro che hanno aderito alla filosofia del #nomakeup in un articolo intitolato “Perché non sono ispirata dalle celebs makeup-free”.
“Si tratta di Alicia Keys. Sapete, la cantante la cui voce suona come oro liquido versato nelle orecchie dagli angeli? Inizia così l’articolo su refinery29.com, e prosegue poi citando altri casi di celebs che, nel loro apparire senza trucco ad eventi pubblici più o meno importanti, vengono definite “coraggiose”, donne da cui prendere ispirazione. Di contro, l’attrice che viene sorpresa a prendere un caffè il sabato mattina, con i capelli in disordine e un brufolo in mezzo alla fronte, viene definita “irriconoscibile”.
Ma c’è un problema di fondo in questo ragionamento: nel momento in cui chiamiamo coraggiose le donne come Alicia Keys, presupponiamo che rinunciare ai cosmetici è in qualche modo un atto pericoloso. “Nel momento in cui smetteremo di lodare o criticare le donne per le loro scelte di trucco” conclude la giornalista “potremo finalmente arrivare a parlare di bellezza per quella che è: come si vuole che sia.”
Non solo Alicia è stata criticata, ai VMAs come alla precedente apparizione dei BETA Awards, per non avere trucco, ma in molti l’hanno invece “accusata” di averlo in realtà indossato. Secondo altri ancora il suo movimento sta “andando troppo oltre”.
Dopo i VMAs, Alicia ha fatto nuovamente parlare di sé quando ha struccato la presentatrice tv del Today Show, Tamron Hall. Durante lo show, Alicia era stata interpellata circa la sua scelta di non usare make-up, e anche in questa occasione aveva ribadito “Non si tratta del trucco. Io amo il trucco, moltissimo, e va bene. Si tratta di come ci si sente, si tratta di quello che sei.”
Alicia non è quindi anti-makeup, ma bensì condanna l’ossessione verso standard di bellezza e perfezione irraggiungibili. Durante lo show ha quindi iniziato a struccare la conduttrice dicendo che il make-up non era necessario. “Guarda come sei bella!” ha esclamato alla fine.
Insomma, da un lato c’è Alicia che con la sua iniziativa dichiara di voler liberare le donne dalla pressione della società; dall’altra ci sono state molte donne e ragazze che vedono il trucco non certo come una costrizione, ma al contrario come un modo di esprimere sé stesse, e che le hanno scritto commenti come “Non ti chiederò scusa perché indosso il rossetto.” Voi come la pensate?
