A band that claims to want to make music with honesty and passion is certainly a courageous band, down-to-earth, despite a mission statement of this type conceal awareness of the difficulty of being honest, to have passion, to do, especially , lasting music, destined to become a classic of our time.
A mysterious alchemy is the one that wants four boys cross over their destinies. Until 1999, no one knows Coldplay, a band like so many there are, but, in 2000, the release of their first album, Parachutes, the group began to rain awards, not always unanimous, the critics and the public. But is it not true to say of those who said 'The important thing is not what is said, the important thing is that we speak'?
And 'the explosion of a phenomenon destined to last, not a common musical meteor.
Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion are Coldplay. Each of them comes from a different place in Britain, however, they have much in common: the passion for music from an early age and the encouragement to follow their own musical aspirations by the respective families that push young people to try their hand at study of one or more instruments.
The four boys meet in September 1996 during their first week at University College London. Martin and Buckland, the first band members to know each other, meet the freshmen party and shake fast friends, study together and founded a group, nothing more common. The two are added before Berryman and then, in 1998, also Champion, a multi-talent capable of playing the piano, guitar, bass and other instruments. But his "assumption" is due to the fact that the band is missing a drummer, so to speak, role. And 'here that Champion comes into play, and quietly pay for yet another, but pleasant, the instrument change.
Another guy wants to be part of the band as a pianist is a shy and awkward Tim Rice-Oxley, then unknown, but then became famous thanks to the birth of his band, Keane.
The guys play just for fun, in the room, in the hallways of the school, but, little by little, the story began as a joke takes on a different shape as long as the four boys begin to seriously believe they can make the big leap and break into the music world. They will become the undisputed leader of the rock scene in the UK.
In the early days the band takes on many different names before The Red Rooster Boogey Band, then The Rocking Honky's and later Starfish. In 1997 it comes to the adoption of real and effective Coldplay name, born from the idea of a friend of Chris Martin, Tim.
The first song written by Coldplay is titled So Sad, a song never released, and of which there is only a recording on cassette possessed by the band staff.
Coldplay are beginning to take their first steps and perform in Camden. Chris recruits his school friend Phil Harvey, and appointed him manager of the group. In 1998 he produced for the same Phil Harvey, another demo cassette long four minutes and 23 seconds which includes two songs: Ode to Deodorant on side A and Brothers & Sisters on side B. This box is the first work unofficially Coldplay. In an interview in 2003, drummer Will Champion says that their debut, despite having a great ending and a good melody for the bass, is a work of little consequence. Even Chris Martin said (joking), on an e-zine of the same year, that just will not listen.
Also in 1998, Coldplay decided to self-produce the first real job, an EP. The publication entitled Safety and is initially designed as a demo to be sent to record companies or to give to friends and family. The EP's title, quite simply, is inspired by a series of photos taken by a friend during the first live performances of the group in which Chris Martin always appears with a shirt that says 'Safety Door'. The Safety EP is the first official record release of Coldplay and is funded by the band thanks to a £ 200 budget. After finishing the engraving work, Chris and partners decided to publish just 500 copies to be distributed in London. Of these, only 50 were held for sale, the rest to family and friends. The cover of the CD shows a photo of Guy Berryman, owned by a friend of the band, such a John Hilton.

Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman e Will Champion sono i Coldplay. Ognuno di loro proviene da un luogo diverso della Gran Bretagna, tuttavia hanno molto in comune: la passione per la musica fin dalla più tenera età e l'incoraggiamento a seguire le proprie aspirazioni musicali da parte delle rispettive famiglie che spingono i ragazzi a cimentarsi nello studio di uno o più strumenti.
I quattro ragazzi si incontrano nel settembre 1996 durante la loro prima settimana di Università al College di Londra. Martin e Buckland, i primi membri della band a conoscersi, si incontrano alla festa delle matricole e stringono subito amicizia, studiano insieme e fondano un gruppo, niente di più comune. Ai due si aggiungono prima Berryman e poi, nel 1998, anche Champion, un multitalento capace di suonare pianoforte, chitarra, basso e altri strumenti. Ma la sua "assunzione" è dovuta al fatto che alla band manca un batterista, per così dire, di ruolo. E' qui che Champion entra in gioco, e si presta tranquillamente per l'ennesimo, ma piacevole, cambio di strumento.
Un altro ragazzo vuole entrare a far parte della band come pianista: è un timido e impacciato Tim Rice-Oxley, allora sconosciuto, ma poi divenuto famoso grazie alla nascita della sua band, i Keane.
I ragazzi suonano quasi per gioco, in camera, nei corridoi della scuola ma, a mano a mano, la storia cominciata per scherzo assume una forma diversa finché i quattro ragazzi cominciano a credere sul serio di poter fare il grande salto di qualità e sfondare nel mondo della musica. Diventeranno i leader indiscussi della scena del rock nel Regno Unito.
Ai primordi la band assume i nomi più svariati, prima The Red Rooster Boogey Band, poi The Rocking Honky's e in seguito Starfish. Nel 1997 si giunge all'adozione effettiva e reale del nome Coldplay, nato dall'idea di un amico di Chris Martin, Tim.
