The coolest 2017 new lipstick trends, from grey lipstick to glitter top coats

This year, lipstick is going all-out. It's no longer just about sticking to one shade, tone or texture. Take a look at the coolest new ways to wear your pout...

The black topcoats that add depth and texture

Forget single colours and textures - 2017 is all about experimenting with layering. That includes cool new topcoats that add depth and definition to your chosen colour. They may look a little intimidating, but these options from Chanel and Lipstick Queen are great at adding that extra edge to your look.
Chanel's Rouge Coco Gloss topcoat in Caviar adds instant depth and a mysterious glossy hue to every lipstick applied. Super glossy yet never sticky, this is an entirely modern concept which works beautifully.
We also really like Lipstick Queen's Black Lace Rabbit lipstick, which leaves a lovely shimmering finish and darkens your colour of choice. It can also be worn alone to create a lace-like veil on the lips.

The marble effect lipstick

Marble lipsticks create a gorgeous, rich wash of colour over the lips. Givenchy's stunning offering is the most perfect red hue with a stunning subtle sheeny finish.

The ombre effect lipsticks

It was only a matter of time before contouring arrived in the world of lipsticks. Always quick to set a trend, Tom Ford's Lip Contour Duo's have become firm favourites here since their release not long ago. Containing a lipstick and liner, this is the ultimate 'your lips but better' product.

Following the success of Pat Mcgrath's glitter lips, a bunch of celebrities and designers took on the mesmerising look. Bold? Sure. Wearable? Not so much. Stila's Glitterati Top Coat adds a gorgeous shimmering sheen to your lips, be it over a lipstick or applied straight to bare lips. And the best bit? It's subtle. For a bolder look, we can't get enough of Jouer's Lip Topper in Rose Gold.

The unconventional celebrity-inspired shades

A blue-toned purple? For the lips? Really? Yep, this vibrant hue can look seriously major (if worn with confidence). The closest shade we've found to Lucy Hale's stunning lipstick is Nyx's Soft Matte Lip Cream in Havana. At £6, it's worth trying out - even if it all goes a bit wrong!
